Make Jiont Efforts for a Better Future
——Remarks of Taleb Rifai, Secretary General of UNWTO, at the Inauguration Ceremony of WTA
I’m very pleased to attend the Inauguration Ceremony of World Tourism Alliance. It will be a wonderful evening as this new important international tourism organization will be inaugurated in Chengdu.
In recent years, the global tourism sector has developed rapidly. Today, it’s already become a comprehensive sector which concerns 1 in 10 jobs and 10% of the world GDP. It has also been working as an effective way to drive the world economy, and ensure a sustainable and inclusive growth.
No one can develop tourism alone. Tourism is an open sector, and we should not work with doors closed, but on the contrary, open the doors even wider and work hand in hand with all stakeholders.
Tourism development can not only rely on the government. As policy maker, market regulator and protector of consumers, government plays an indispensable role. For many years, UNWTO has been partnering closely with many national governments including the Chinese government to enhance the importance of the tourism sector. However, to make the sector more competitive, to better satisfy traveler’s needs, we need to unite forces of the whole sector. All these reasons are behind the creation of World Tourism Alliance .
WTA will unite elites of global tourism sector, including tourism associations of many countries, important tourism companies, tourism institutes and tourism experts. WTA will dedicate itself to tourism development and make the world a better place with great goals of development, poverty reduction and peace through tourism, so as to ensure a greater future of tourism.
WTA and UNWTO share the same ideas and objectives. They are fully aligned with the common goal of making tourism a pillar of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and its 17 SDGs.
I’m very happy to see WTA being born in China. China has initiated and inaugurated WTA. Once again China is showing its leadership, its resolution and vision in the field of tourism.
We warmly welcome this initiative, and we stand ready to work side by side with WTA to build a better future for mankind through tourism.
Ladies and gentlemen,
By working together, the world will be better! By working together, we can make a difference! It’s for the good of mankind and our planet.
